"I know that people were doubting an online class all along, but I genuinely believe that this was my most influential class of college thus far. The format not only taught me loads of organic chemistry, but also important life skills."
-Joe Weiner

"Well I'm sure you've heard it before, but I do think that the interactive online delivery of the course provided an amazing learning experience that will change the way content is delivered. Don't get me wrong - it was not all hugs and kisses with ACE the entire semester - but looking back, all of the challenges helped me to learn more about myself and organic chemistry. Taking this course was definitely worth it."
-Derek R. Vardon

" . . . I have really grown to like the online format of this course. I feel like I can learn SO much more through an online format than a live format."
-Jordy Sharlin

". . .The online lecture format taught me a lot about responsibility, time management and prioritizing. In most jobs deadlines are given, however your day-to-day work is managed by yourself. This course taught me how to be responsible about watching lectures and prioritizing my work. No other class has been able to teach me as much about life skills as this course has. I walk away from this course knowing that I have learned more in this class (not only about organic chemistry but also about important life skills) than I have in any other course."

"Once I got used to it, I loved the online format, and the online ACE exams are absolutely wonderful when everything works right. It really forces you to synthesize all the material when you have so many resources and no wasted time on repeatedly drawing molecules, etc. I appreciate that you are trying to improve the way that students learn, and I think the class overall is much more valuable online than it would be in the standard in-person format. Thank you for caring so much about your students!"
-Michael Froehlich

"While going through all the material from this semester, I truly realized how much I have learned. I believe that the format of this class was set up perfectly for someone willing to put in the effort to learn the chemistry. I hit a few rough spots with problems in technology, but in the end it turned out to be a success. I still remember our first meeting in Animal Science, and you explaining how hard you and others had worked to put this system together. I would just like to extend my thanks to all of you. . . ."

"In today's education, the extreme grade consciousness can make people forget how cool learning can actually be... I went into the final more confident in my knowledge because I knew that I had learned so much... so thank you so much for the kind email and good luck with the online format in this class because I really believe that ACE has created an opportunity to understand this material rather than memorize it.."

"The new format of the class being on-line with the computerized exams is extremely beneficial to the students and I am glad that I was able to experience it. Students of the future will be very fortunate to take this class as you have geared it to develop students in the fairest way."

"This class was definitely nothing like any of my other classes. It has taught me a lot about how I should approach problems in terms of critical thinking and to not give up so easily because anything is possible! Overall it was a great experience in contrast to other ways of learning chemistry since I was able to control the pace of my learning with the webcasts and by doing POTDS, etc. It really felt good to do well on the final because it feels as though I was able to put the pieces of organic chemistry together into a bigger picture."

"Organic chemistry, a feared subject for many college students, was made fun, inviting, and comprehensible by taking your class. The online format that initially caused my peers and me trepidation ended up being an amazing teaching method. Through the use of online tools that integrated the course material, I learned more in your class than any other I have taken here at the U of I. I had fun, knowing all the while that I was mastering organic chemistry."

Quite unexpectedly, I found that teaching online is more interactive and personal than the traditional lecture format, especially for a large class. Teaching online has shifted my instruction from information-delivery to interactive problem solving
-- Jeffrey Moore, Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences

Online, I'm quickly able to discover areas in which students excel, and where they're struggling. What's more, the sophistication of tools and techniques we now use for problem solving far exceeds what I used in the traditional lecture hall.
-- Jeffrey Moore, Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences

Teaching online has made it possible to offer interactive discussion sections and group projects, even in large-enrollment courses. Prior to online instruction, discussion sections didn't exist and group projects were virtually impossible.
-- Jeffrey Moore, Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences

Last year in our online discussion sections, students in Champaign-Urbana solved problems, interactively and synchronously, with students in Lahore, Pakistan and Beijing, China. The time difference was the biggest obstacle. The bounds of our classroom have expanded!
-- Jeffrey Moore, Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences

I have enjoyed creating online activities that allow for sophisticated thinking, rather than memorization, and have been impressed at the ideas my students share. The different kinds of work I can assign students in these settings
give them more freedom over what and how they learn, and thus creates more
excitement about the material
-- Kate Clancy, Professor of Anthropology

I certainly do not claim to be an early adopter of technology. Even so, learning to use some new tools and being able to share them with my students has enriched my online course and my students' professional preparation far beyond anything I was able to do in my face-to-face course.
-- Wayne Dickerson, Professor of Linguistics

Like any online instructor, I concentrated at first exclusively on preparing professionals in my area of expertise. Although that is quite enough to do, I soon found a second motivation for my work — preparing the next generation of online teachers. Now I say to my students, 'If you stay in education, online teaching will be in your future. So think of yourself in my shoes in the not-too-distant future and how you could use the rich variety of online experiences your having to benefit your students'.

As a beginning online learner not long ago, I felt that the student-teacher interaction was like two blindfolded people, trying to get a sense of each other without the benefit of face-to-face communication. I wondered if I could ever be happy as an online instructor. It wasn't long, however, before I discovered I was learning more about my students than ever before. Why? Because the online environment gives me more tools to get to know them - online forums allow me to ask more probing, individualized questions; I am able to draw out students' beliefs and draw on their personal experiences for the benefit of all; I get to observe how students interact with each other in groups, and I discover who the helpers are and who tend to need help. There is so much more interaction between my students and me that I wonder why I was so worried.
-- Wayne Dickerson, Professor of Linguistics

I have long known that to optimize learning, we teachers need to offer instruction in ways that students learn best — using the visual medium for visual learners, the acoustic medium for auditory learners, etc. I was not able to respond to different learning styles very well until I began teaching online and could use multimedia so readily in my instruction. I have the sense that I'm reaching my students better now than ever before.
-- Wayne Dickerson, Professor of Linguistics
